Quick Checklist for Moving

There are so many things to think about and moving day can get so frantic! You might find it helpful to keep a moving checklist with you, so if your brain moves before you do, you won't find yourself in a predicament. Here is a handy checklist to help keep you on track for a smooth move.

  1. Schedule your move far enough in advance to eliminate additional stress and expense. Certain times are more expensive and much busier than others. Don't wait until the last minute to book your move!

  2. Order moving boxes and packing as early as possible so that you can start packing the non-essentials.

  3. Make arrangements for mail and utilities.

  4. Transfer school and medical records.

  5. Check out the IRS website for information on deducting moving expenses from your taxes. Be sure to keep receipts.

  6. Start paring down. Give away anything you don't want to move.

  7. Take inventory. Catalog items with a pen and paper as you load them for insurance purposes.

  8. Create a "V.I.P." box for important things you can't replace and move that with you.

  9. Let the packers create an "essentials" box for things you must have on hand until your goods arrive.

  10. Create a "First off the truck" box that contains cleaning supplies, paper plates, toilet paper and other items you will need on your first day in your new place.

  11. Make certain you have plenty of cash on hand before moving day and money in the bank in case of emergency.

That's it! Use these suggestions as a starting point and you should be on your way to a successful move.
